Farm Fresh Friday – Celine and Tina Visit Jet Fresh Flower Growers, S.A.

Now that we’re all settled in our new Miami branch office, we’re back with a brand new edition of Farm Fresh Friday.

Since Olga and Jesselynn’s latest visit to our rose farm, Jet Fresh Flower Growers, S.A. in Cotopaxi, Ecuador, there have been exciting new updates occurring. Last week our farm team planted a new rose variety, as well as begun preparation for our new greenhouse. Celine and Tina visited the farm for the first time and witnessed all of these exciting changes firsthand.

The ladies had a wonderful time exploring our rose farm and learning so much about how our roses are bred, grown and produced for distribution.

With all the great changes occurring at the farm, they received an up-close view of all the exciting updates at the farm. Meeting the team and seeing the different processes in person, they shared an even deeper appreciation for all the work going on behind-the-scenes at Jet Fresh Flower Growers.

New Rose Variety

Coming soon to Jet Fresh Flower Growers, S.A. is the beautiful rose variety, “Sandy.”

From the breeders, Conectiflor S.A. and JAN SPEK ROZEN, “Sandy” is a gorgeous rose that’s perfect for wedding season.

“Sandy” is an elegant combination of cream and blush which, together, creates a subtle light peach hue. This unique variety complements many color palettes, and stands out beautifully in floral arrangements for weddings and special events.

“Sandy” has a L/XL bloom size and a 12-14 day vase life. We’re so excited to be growing Sandy. Stay tuned for production updates!

Planting “Sandy”

Last week, we started planting “Sandy” in the greenhouse where we recently eradicated “Ambiance.”

A common way to breed roses naturally from the parent stock is through grafting. Bud grafting is done by taking a bud from one rose, called the cultivar or bud root, and grafting that bud onto a different rose, called the root stock or mother plant (patrones.) The mother plant is already planted into the ground.

The bud which is grafted is called a scion. The scion bud comes from a rose bush where the buds recently bloomed. By carving the bud from the cultivar or bud root with a sharp knife, and inserting it into the skin of the root stock, the scion root is attached using a special tape which dissolves called parafilm.

New Greenhouse Production

In addition to planting a new rose variety, the farm also cleared space to begin the installation process for our new greenhouse.

Jet Fresh Flower Growers, S.A. already has 11 greenhouses, and will soon have another to make room for new rose varieties.

Using a tractor, they plowed (arado) through the land preparing the soil for planting. Years ago this was achieved with the help of buffalos. The tractor makes it much easier, of course!
